Flea Market FridayS: 11/20/20

November 20, 2020

The find this week on our flea market run, unbelievably, was a complete set of Edwardian undergarments, plus a 1960s hat, a beaded bag from the 1970s and vintage earrings. I also found a vintage laundry bag that looks like it was made for my 1960s steamer trunk and a jeweler’s sample case to store the exhibit jewelry.

The Edwardian Undergarments

The cotton romper, known as a camiknicker, camisole and slip set really is the find of the week, maybe even the decade. I mean, to find 100-year-old undergarments in near pristine condition is remarkable. Though they’re from the Edwardian era, which predates what I’m presenting in my exhibit, I’ll use them to show how women were cloaked and cinched before they roared into the ‘20s and let everything hang loose. They’re even monogramed.

The HatThis beautiful coral straw hat by Sandra, included in this slide show, is styled like a man’s fedora but was called the Vagabond in the 1960s. Though a bit misshapen and worn when purchased it looks like new, now, after a good steaming.

The “wasp’s nest” BagI think this little rafia bag, that looks like a wasp’s nest, is from the 1940s, but I’m still doing research on this one.

The Black ClipsI haven’t dated these big chunky clip earrings, yet, but unbelievably when I got back to my shop, I had a necklace that matched. Crazy.

The Lavender BlingThese earrings were really a great find because they’ll go with a purple and pink outfit we just put together this week and they’re two in one. You can wear them as shown or as just the little pink pearls.

The CaseI wasn’t really looking for storage this week but when a jeweler’s sample case showed up, well, I couldn’t pass it up. The clincher was that it has six drawers, one for each decade covered in the exhibit.
