Fun facts: what the heck is a camiknicker?

November 2020

A camiknicker was the Edwardian lady’s teddy …

a camisole and panties all in one.

That’s the camiknicker hanging on the left, to be worn under the petticoat.

I lucked into these beautiful treasures. I just happened to walk into one of my favorite antique shops in the same week that a woman had dropped off the contents of a family trunk that had been packed away in an attic.

The box they were in at the shop was filled with Edwardian era and 1920s pieces, including shoes and flapper dresses, that were in near-pristine condition.

Though they are not within my “Flappers to Fringe” timeframe, they lead into the story of how young women coming into the 1920s wanted clothing to be less fussy and constrictive.

Plus, these 100-year-old pieces are truly rare to find, anymore, and these are in such good condition. Unbelievable, really. They’ll be staying in my permanent collection, for now.
